"Freedom of the press is not a privilege; it is a right. The intent of the [first] amendment was not to protect journalists but to guarantee the public's right to know. So when Congress extended that protection to Stars and Stripes, it sought to guarantee that the people who defend our democracy have a right to the free flow of news and information that allows them to participate in it as informed citizens."
